STUDY WITHOUT A STUDY PERMIT

Study in Canada doesn’t always mean you need a study permit.

In most cases, a foreign national will require a Canadian study permit in order to study in Canada at any level. In some circumstances, however, a foreign student may be exempt from requiring this.

Introduction to : Study in Canada without a Study Permit

Short-Term Study in Canada
A study permit is not required if the program of study is six months or less. These courses can cover any subject and may be full or part time. A Visa extension will not be granted simply for the purpose of completing a short-term program.

Minor Children in Canada
Any minor child studying at pre-school, primary or secondary level and residing in Canada may study without a permit. This includes the children of temporary students or workers, as well as permanent residents and Canadian citizens.

Family Members and Private Staff of Diplomats
Any family member or member of private staff for a foreign diplomat or foreign accredited representative does not require a permit to study in Canada. In this circumstance, a family member is defined as:

  • A spouse or common-law partner
  • The dependent child of the individual or their spouse/common-law partner
  • The dependent child of a dependent child

Members of Foreign Armed Forces in Canada
Any member of the armed forces of a country that is a designated state under the Visiting Forces Act do not require a permit to study in Canada.

STUDY PERMIT EXTENSION

For International Students

Many international students who complete post-secondary education in Canada wish to stay and obtain Canadian work experience.

Introduction to : Extend your Study Permit

All international students must ensure that they have a valid Study Permit. It is crucial that extension is applied for at least 30 days before the expiry date of your study permit. We would advise you to apply early as it may help you to remain in Canada under the same conditions as your study permit, until a decision is reached.

If you wish to extend your stay in Canada as a student or renew your study permit, at least 60 to 90 days are required before your study permit expires, allowing us to apply for the extension in that time.

For any questions about the Post-Graduation Work Permit, and to learn how you can stay and work in Canada once your studies are complete, please do not hesitate to book a consultation with Chitra, our Immigration Consultant.
