New Pathway to Permanent Residency for Over 90,000 Essential Temporary Workers and International Graduates

IRCC just introduced a new pathway to permanent residency

“The pandemic has shone a bright light on the incredible contributions of newcomers. These new policies will help those with a temporary status to plan their future in Canada, play a key role in our economic recovery and help us build back better. Our message to them is simple: your status may be temporary, but your contributions are lasting—and we want you to stay.”

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marco E. L. Mendicino announced a new pathway for permanent residency. This pathway will be for over 90,000 international graduates and essential workers who are actively contributing to the Canadian economy.

These special public policies will grant permanent residence status to temporary essential workers and international graduates who are already in Canada and have the skills and experience to fight the pandemic and accelerate the Canadian economic recovery!

Who is it for?

Effective May 6, 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will begin accepting applications under the following three streams:

  • 20,000 applications for temporary workers in health care
  • 30,000 applications for temporary workers in other selected essential occupations
  • 40,000 applications for international students who graduated from a Canadian institution

IRCC is launching 3 additional streams to promote Canada’s official languages! These new streams focus on French-speaking or Bilingual candidates, and will have unlimited intake. To find out more about eligibility requirements for these streams, navigate to the public policies.

What are the Eligibility Requirements?
The new pathway focuses on temporary essential workers with 1 year of work experience; Working in hospitals, long term care homes and on the frontlines of essential sectors.

The program also paves way for International graduates driving the Canadian economy. International graduates must have completed an eligible post-secondary program within the last 4 years, and no earlier than January 2017.

These new public policies apply to workers in 40 healthcare occupations and 95 other essential jobs across a range of fields; Some of these fields include caregiving and food production and distribution.

When can i apply?

The streams will remain open until November 5, 2021 or until they have reached their limit (90,000 new permanent residence in these 3 streams). Due to the number of applicants, we recommend applying as soon as you become eligible so that you don’t miss out on these special programs.
