What is an Invitation Letter?

The Canadian Letter of Invitation is written in good faith by a Canadian resident to the Canadian embassy or Consulate outside of Canada. Visa officers ensure that the applicant meets the terms of immigration according to the Canadian law to issue a visa.

Please note that an invitation letter does not guarantee that a visa will be issued. The individual inviting the applicant (visitor) is not legally responsible for the visitor once the visitor reaches Canada. The letter must be written truthfully with an intent to keep the promises made in the letter.

The letter of invitation helps facilitate the application and allows proper decision making by the immigration officers. A good letter is focused, brief, and includes all essential details that may be required to communicate with the officers.

Who can write Invitation Letter?

The Canadian invitation letter can be written by anyone you know well. This includes close family members such as parents, grandparents, siblings, spouse, child, close friends, or even business partners if you are visiting Canada for business purposes.

The Invitation Letter must be written by a Canadian Permanent Resident or Citizen of Canada. They must have a good standing status as well as a job and stream of income to increase the chances that their letter will have a positive impact on the Canadian Consulate’s decision to give you the visa.

What do I need to include in my Canadian Invitation Letter?

When you write the Letter of Invitation for your friend or family member who wants to visit Canada, you must include the following information in the invitation letter about the visitor

  • Full Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Address and telephone number
  • Relationship with the host
  • Purpose of the trip (eg: weddings, birthdays, birth of a child in the family, friendly visit, etc.)
  • Duration of their stay in Canada (include the entry and exit date if possible)
  • Place of stay of the applicant, and how they will cover their expenses

You should also include the following information about the Canadian Resident inviting their friends/family in the Canadian Invitation Letter:

  • Full Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Canadian address and telephone number
  • Job title
  • Status in Canada (i.e. Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen)
  • A photocopy of a document proving your status in Canada, such as:
    • Your temporary resident status (e.g. study permit or work permit)
    • Your Canadian birth certificate, if you were born in Canada
    • Your Canadian citizenship card, if you are a naturalized citizen
    • Your Permanent Resident card or your IMM 1000 proof of landing, if you are a permanent resident
  • Details of family, i.e., names and dates of birth of spouse and dependents (mandatory for parent and grandparent super visa)
  • Total number of people living in the household, including people sponsored by you whose sponsorship is still in effect (mandatory for parent and grandparent super visa)

What do you need for a visa to visit Canada?

  • valid travel document (such as passport)
  • good-health
  • no criminal record or immigration related convictions
  • ties with home country (job/house/family etc.)
  • conviction to leave Canada at the end of the visit
  • finances for travel and stay

Along-with the above-mentioned requirements, a medical exam and a letter of invitation from someone in Canada may be required.

If you are applying for a SuperVisa, you might need to get your eligibility checked by a professional.

Does my Canadian Invitation Letter need to be notarized?

Some visa officers may ask that a notary public notarize the letter. Since there may not be an earlier intimation of whether the letter is required to be notarized, many individuals prefer to keep a notarized copy ready for submission, thus avoiding delays.

You will not know ahead of time if your visa officer will request a notarized invitation letter. As such, many applicants opt to have a notarized copy ready to submit upon request to avoid potential delays in submitting their application. If you wait to submit an invitation letter until the visa office requests you to submit one, your application will be delayed.
