ALBERTA OPPORTUNITY STREAM

Alberta Opportunity Stream allows temporary foreign workers who have full-time jobs in Alberta and/or a full-time job offer from an employer in Alberta to apply for permanent residency in the province.

To be eligible for this immigration stream, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
  • LMIA exemptions for workers-based
  • Open work permit for vulnerable workers issued by IRCC
  • Post-graduate work permit or an open work permit from an institution in Alberta that is supported and funded by Alberta Advanced Education issued by IRCC

More eligibility requirements that you need to meet:

Work Experience

  • Current work must be an eligible occupation in Alberta when submitting your AAIP application
  • Full-time work experience of 1 year within Alberta within the last 1 and a half years. If you are currently working outside Alberta or Canada, you must have at least 2 years of full-time work experience within the last 2 and a half years
  • A 6 months of full-time work experience in Alberta is needed if you are a post-graduate work permit holder

Language

  • Required language score depending on your occupation under NOC
      • NOC 0, A, or B – Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 5 and/or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) Level 5 for each language’s respective language skills
      • NOC C or D – Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 4 and/or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) Level 4 for each language’s respective language skills
      • For NOC 3413, you must have at least a CLB Level 7 or NCLC Level 7 for each language’s respective language skills
  • Language test results must no longer be 2 years old when you submit your AAIP application

Education

  • Completed a minimum of high school education that is equivalent to the Canadian study. Together, you need to submit an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to prove your highest level of education
  • If you are a post-graduate work permit holder, you must graduated from an institution in Alberta that is supported and funded publicly by Alberta Advanced Education

Job offer

  • Job offer that is full-time from an employer in Alberta

ALBERTA EXPRESS ENTRY STREAM

Alberta offers foreign workers to settle in Alberta permanently through the Express Entry, which is the most popular immigration pathway of the Canadian government.

However, the eligibility criteria for this stream depend on which stream under Alberta Express Entry Stream you would like to apply for.

There are two streams under Alberta Express Entry Stream which are:

1. General Express Entry

You must meet the following criteria for the general Express Entry to be eligible to apply:

  • A letter of Notification of Interest from Alberta
  • Active Express Entry profile
  • Current occupation will support the growth and diversification of the economy of Alberta
  • Qualified to apply for one of the federal immigration programs of Canada:
      • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
      • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
      • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Intention to live and work in Alberta permanently
  • Score of at least 300 in Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

Meanwhile, here are the following factors that may increase your chance to be eligible for general Express Entry:

  • Job offer from an employer in Alberta
  • Graduated from a post-secondary school in Alberta
  • Family members or relatives who are citizens or permanent residents in Canada
  • First language is French

2. Accelerated Tech Pathway

To be eligible to apply under Accelerated Tech Pathway, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Active Express Entry Profile
  • Qualified to apply for one of the federal immigration programs of Canada:
      • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
      • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
      • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Score of at least 300 in Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)
  • Full-time work in Alberta or a full-time job offer from an employer in Alberta in the tech industry
  • Current work must be an eligible occupation in Alberta when submitting your AAIP application
  • Valid immigration status when you are currently working in Alberta and submit your AAIP application
  • Intention to live and work in Alberta permanently

RURAL RENEWAL STREAM

These are the eligibility criteria that you need to meet to apply for this stream:

  • Intention to live and settle in one of the communities of Alberta
  • Received an endorsement letter from your chosen community in Alberta
  • Full-time eligible job offer from an employer in Alberta
  • Obtain the required licensing, registration, or certification to work on your job offer in Alberta

Moreover, here are the other eligibility criteria that you need to meet to apply for this stream:

  • Full-time work experience of at least 1 year in an eligible occupation within the last 1 and a half years. Hence, if you are a post-graduate work permit holder and have graduated from a two-year secondary program in an eligible institution in Alberta, you are not required to have 1 year of work experience
  • Required language score depending on your occupation under NOC
      • NOC 0, A, or B – Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 5 and/or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) Level 5 for each language’s respective language skills
      • NOC C or D – Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 4 and/or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) Level 4 for each language’s respective language skills
      • For NOC 3413, you must have at least a CLB Level 7 or NCLC Level 7 for each language’s respective language skills
  • Language test results must no longer be 2 years old when you submit your AAIP application

RURAL ENTREPRENEUR STREAM

Rural Entrepreneur Stream allows entrepreneurs from outside Alberta to start or purchase an existing business in one of the participating communities of the province, which may help them in economic growth.

You may be eligible to apply for this stream if you meet the following criteria:

  • Work experience depending on the position:
      • Business owner or manager – 3 years
      • Senior manager – 4 years
  • Completed a minimum of high school education that is equivalent to the Canadian study. Together, you need to submit an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to prove your highest level of education
  • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 4 and/or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) Level 4 for each language’s respective language skills
  • Language test results must no longer be 2 years old when you submit your AAIP application
  • Net worth of at least $300,00
  • Investment of at least $200,000
  • Received a Community Support Letter from a participating community in Alberta

On the other hand, your business must also meet the following eligibility criteria before you can operate it in Alberta:

  • Owned at least 51% of your newly established business
  • Business partners with citizens and/or permanent residents of Canada
  • Owned 100% of your newly purchased eligible business
  • Create at least one full-time job for citizens and/or permanent residents of Canada for at least 6 months

Moreover, there are criteria that may increase your chance to be eligible to apply for this stream. You must:

  • Be a business successor in a business operating in Alberta
  • Be between 21 to 55 years old
  • Have a spouse or a common-law partner who completed at least 1 year of a full-time post-secondary secondary education and a CLB Level 4 or NCLC Level 4 for each language’s respective language skills
  • Have relatives in Canada who are citizens and/or permanent residents

GRADUATE ENTREPRENEUR STREAM

Graduate Entrepreneur Stream allows international students who graduated from an institution in Alberta to establish or buy an existing business in the province.

These are the eligibility criteria that you need to meet to apply for this stream:

  • Completed at least 2 years of full-time education with a degree or a diploma at an institution in Alberta that is funded publicly by the Alberta Advanced Education
  • Hold a post-graduate work permit (PGWP) that is still valid on the date when you submitted your Expression of Interest (EOI)
  • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 7 and/or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) Level 7 for each language’s respective language skills
  • Language test results must no longer be 2 years old when you submit your AAIP application
  • Start or buy an eligible existing business in Alberta with at least 34% of ownership

Furthermore, here are the factors that may increase your eligibility to apply for this stream:

  • Work experience of at least 6 months
  • Ability to provide an economic benefit in Alberta
  • Age ranges from 21 to 55 years old
  • Have a spouse or a common-law partner who completed at least 2 years of full-time post-secondary education; full-time employment of at least 1 year in Alberta; and a CLB Level 5 or NCLC Level 5 for each language’s respective language skills
  • Have relatives in Canada who are citizens and/or permanent residents

FARM STREAM

FOREIGN GRADUATE ENTREPRENEUR STREAM

Foreign Graduate Entrepreneurs Stream allows international graduates from outside Canada who are qualified to start or purchase an existing start-up or innovative business in Alberta. After they started or purchased an existing business, they would be able to apply for permanent residency.

You must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this stream:

  • Work experience of at least 6 months in owning or managing a business
  • Completed degree from a post-secondary institution outside Canada. Together, you need to submit an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to prove your highest level of education
  • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 5 and/or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) Level 4 for each language’s respective language skills
  • Language test results must no longer be 5 years old when you submit your AAIP application
  • Net worth of at least $300,00
  • Investment of at least $100,000 if the business is located in an urban area while $50,000 if located in a regional area
  • Received a letter of recommendation from an agency that is AAIP-approved
  • Financial resources to settle and start their business in Alberta

Also, your business must have the following to be eligible to operate in Alberta:

  • Proposed business plan with projected financials
  • Presentation of at least 10 minutes with an outline of your business ventures and focuses on what business investors need to see
  • Owned at least 34% of your newly established business if it’s located in an urban area while 51% if located in a regional area
  • Business partners with citizens and/or permanent residents of Canada
